Tinariwen
Producer: San Francisco Jazz Organization
Far more than a band, Tinariwen stands as an icon of freedom and resistance
among the nomadic Tuareg, one of the oldest and proudest peoples on
earth. Over the past two decades this mesmerizing group of guitar-poets
from the southern reaches of the Sahara Desert has transposed traditional
melodies to the electric guitar, mixing them with blues, rock, Berber
and Arabic influences. With its mesmerizing call-and-response vocals
driven by lean guitar riffs and the hollow clip-clop of the calabash
(African bottle gourd), Tinariwen showcases a new generation of Tuareg
musicians eager to shoulder the band's oversized role as representatives
of their people. This is a multi-culti stew, second to none!
Tickets are $20/$30/$40/$60 and are available by calling 1-866-920-5299,
or online at sfjazz.org or in person at the SFJazz Box Office, 3 Embarcadero
Center, lobby level (no service charge)

Thu~4/16/09 8PM
Chris Potter's Underground Ambrose Akinmusire Group
Producer: San Francisco Jazz Organization
A prodigy who started performing professionally in his early teens,
Chris Potter stands as one of the most inventive saxophonists performing
today. The 38-year-old Potter became a leading force on the progressive
mainstream scene as a key collaborator with star trumpeter Dave Douglas
and iconic bassist Dave Holland. Increasingly establishing his own identity
as a bandleader, he documented his highly calibrated funk/fusion combo
Underground on 2007's Follow the Red Line: Live at the Village Vanguard.
With his fat, crackling sound, trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire started
attracting attention as a standout in the Berkeley High School band.
Since his 2007 first-place triumph at the Thelonious Monk International
Jazz Competition, the most prestigious award for young players, the
26-year-old has become a rising star on the New York scene.
Tickets are $20/$30/$40/$60 and are available by calling 1-866-920-5299,
or online at sfjazz.org or in person at the SFJazz Box Office, 3 Embarcadero
Center, lobby level (no service charge)

Adam Theis
with special guest Lyrics Born
Producer: San Francisco Jazz Organization
A creative force on the Bay Area jazz scene for more than a decade,
trombonist and bassist Adam Theis is a visionary bandleader who has
launched a series of stylistically expansive large ensembles. With his
Jazz Mafia Horns, the Santa Rosa native has backed an astounding array
of artists, from Zion-I and Bing Ji Ling to Will Bernard's Motherbug
and Thomas Dolby. He tackles his most ambitious project yet with an
hour-long, SFJAZZ-commissioned suite that merges modern jazz and symphonic
instrumentation with hip-hop and electronic music, featuring a 60-piece
ensemble drawn from Theis's Realistic Orchestra, Shotgun Wedding Hip-Hop
Symphony, and special guest artists including Bay Area rap phenomenon
Lyrics Born.

Hugh Masekela
70th Birthday Celebration
Producer: San Francisco Jazz Organization
Before "world music" there was Hugh Masekela, the iconic South
African trumpeter whose blazing chops, groove-driven sound and activist
spirit powered hits like "Grazing in the Grass" and "Mandela".
He will perform his classic repertoire along with material from his
new Times Square release, Phola. This special performance will celebrate
the living legend's 70th birthday with a liberating evening of "freedom"
music.
Tickets are $25/$35/$45/$55 and are available by calling 1-866-920-5299,

McCoy Tyner Trio
with special guest Bobby Hutcherson
Producer: San Francisco Jazz Organization
A celebration of McCoy Tyner runs through the Spring Season, but there's
no substitute for a first-hand encounter with the 70-year old legend.
His tidal piano style and masterly compositions have influenced just
about every jazz musician since the early 1960s, when his huge, ringing
chords anchored John Coltrane's volcanic quartet. He's maintained the
same daunting level of creativity as a bandleader, recording dozens
of awe-inspiring albums, particularly for Milestone. His latest release,
Guitars (Half Note), features John Scofield, Bill Frisell, Marc Ribot
and Derek Trucks. For this special, singular SFJAZZ performance, he's
joined by vibraphone master Bobby Hutcherson.
Tickets: SFJAZZ Members - $18; $30; $41; Premium $56
Non-Members - $25; $40; $55; Premium $75
